In line with the excellence initiative, the mathematics at the university of Göttingen is sustained by three junior research groups in the Courant research center Higher Order Structure in Mathematics, a free floating junior research group Discrete Differential Geometry as well as by a junoir research group Statistical Methods, which is part of the Courant research center Poverty, Equity and Growth in Developing Countries. About the excellence initiative of 2006/20072007, the Georg-August university of Göttingen was successful in the evaluation round with the strategy for the future "Tradition-Innovation-Autonomie" ("tradition-innovation-autonomy") for promoting top-level university research in the funding line three of the excellence initiative (period of sponsorship: 01.11.2007-31.10.2012).
Also, the "Göttingen Graduate School of Neuro- and Molecular Biosciences" is supported in the funding line one (period of sponsorship: 01.11.2007-31.10.2012). Already at 2006, the Göttinger excellence cluster "Microscopy at the Nanometer Range" was authorized in the funding line two (period of sponsorship: 01.11.2006-31.10.2011).
For these reasons, the university of Göttingen is one of the total of nine excellence universities (RWTH Aachen, FU Berlin, Freiburg, Göttingen, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, LMU München and TU München) in Germany, cf. the map of Germany (pdf, German) of the DFG and detailed booklet of the DFG Initiative of excellence at one glance (pdf, German)
In the evaluation round of 2007, there were full applications for 44 graduation schools, 40 excellence clusters and 8 strategies for the future from a total of 35 universities. 21 graduation schools, 20 excellence clusters and 6 strategies for the future of 28 universities were granted. Altogether, 85 projects out of 37 universities were sponsored by the two evaluation rounds of 2006 and 2007.
